My Te Araroa Trail statistics

Here are a variety of statistics about my Te Araroa journey...

2020/2021                  (Covid 19 limited the year)

2021/2022            1

2022/2023            1

Rakuira/Stewart Island     45 kms

% of total distance          17%

It is approximately 3200 km's from Cape Reinga to Bluff, with an additional 40 km's added by the Rakuira Great Walk on Stewart Island which I intend to add to my journey.

That is 3220 km's I need to complete!

Total $ amount spend to date:

Totals so far (2015-):

Transport:               $465.00
Accommodation:    $482.00
Stove fuel               $  70.00
Food:                      $245.00
Equipment:             $872.00
Misc:                      $320.00

Grand Total:           $3923.00

The cost of food adds up over time...

Some sections are more costly than others depending on transport to and from the trail heads and accommodation en route. Generally South Island sections should cost less as I do not have as far to travel and there are opportunities to camp/hut at the trail heads.

For a comparison, here are three completed sections one costly and two less so:

Queen Charlotte Track (2016):

The QCT is a quasi private track, you must catch a water taxi to the start and end of the track.

Transport:                    $265.00 (Ferry + cost to get to/from Picton)
Accommodation :        $182.00 (Accommodation in Picton at start/finish + campsites)
Food:                           $60.00
Misc:                           $60.00

Total:                          $567.00

Transportation: on the water taxi to Ship Bay, QCT

Ada Homestead to Boyle Outdoor Education Centre (2015):

Part of the St James Walkway, this section is a typical DOC back country track.

Transport:                 $100.00 (Car to start/end of track)
Accommodation       $ 0.00 (DOC Hut Pass, $95 per year for FMC members)
Food:                        $45.00
Misc:                        $30.00

Total:                        $175.00

Tongariro Alpine Crossing/Whanganui River Journey/Waiau Pass Crossing (1990's):

These cost me nothing as they were part of a NZ Army exercise using resources provided by the army.
