Here is a photo montage of all the DOC back country huts I have visited while section walking the Te Araroa Trail. If you walk the classic Te Araroa Trail route you will potentially stay in or pass 83 DOC huts.
North Island:
I completed a couple of sections of the present Te Araroa Trail in the North Island when I lived there back in the 1980-1990's before the trail officially came into being. The tracks are now part of the TA...back then they were just local tracks networks.
