I have updated my post about tramping the Tongariro Crossing in the early 1990's as part of my Army days.
This trip was basically a lark, we had nothing better to do so one of the Sergeants, who was a keen tramper, said "...lets go walk around the volcanoes...". It makes sense you can clearly see all of them from the now defunct Army Training Ground at Waiouru, you just have to walk outside.
I imagine the Army operates much the same in 2016 (your tax dollars at work people...).
As an exercise in keeping the troop-ies fit it rocks, as far as transferable skills....not so much.
I have added some scanned black and white photos I took at the time and a little more commentary.

Some time in the future I will go back and tramp the track again just to see how it has changed from the primitive goat track it was way back then.
